It was always in my very nature to hold back: thought, opinion, but mostly feeling. When I first met people like you, I was excited, because you operated the same way. I felt that the few of us were the only ones who really understood things, our cynicism set us apart from the wide-eyed crowds. But now I’ve learned, we were always drawn to each other for the wrong reasons, because we had the same darkness and fears that we tried to cover with impenetrable facades. Friendships like ours only encouraged cynicisms to fester, holding us back from growing as people.
I’m glad to’ve met more people who’ve taught me that being open is okay simply by being open books themselves, putting themselves out there in vulnerable situations, giving constant care and concern to others without expecting much in return.
